Although / even though / though

 

“- e rağmen” anlamındadırlar ve karşıtlık belirtirler. “Although, even though, though” cümlenin başına konulduklarında ana cümle ile yan cümlenin arasına virgül konur, fakat ortada yer aldıklarında araya virgül konulmaz.

 

v       Although I am not sure, I believe that  he is innocent[a1] .                                               

 

v       I like my apartment a lot although it is quite small.[a2]                                                    

 

v       He managed to escape even though  four men tried to catch him.[a3]                 

 

v       Though that resturant is very expensive, it’s always full.[a4]                                          

v       Even though he was tired and hungry, Uncle Ben still refused to break for dinner until he’d finished the job.[a5]                                                     

 

Despite ,in spite of  “- e rağmen”  kendisinden sonra cümle almaz. Gerund (fiil+ing) ya da isim alır.

 

v       I still enjoyed the picnic despite the weather[a6] 

 

v       Despite losing key players to injury, the team managed to remain undefeated in the final weeks of the season[a7] 

 

v       In spite of last night's terrorist attack, most people seem to be going about their business as if nothing had happened[a8] 

 

v       He failed the test in spite of studying hard.[a9] 

 

 

 

Despite the fact / in spite of the fact  “- e rağmen”   kendisinden sonra cümle alır.

 

v       Despite the fact that it is raining heavily, he went out without an umbrella.[a10]

While “- e rağmen”

Yukardaki kalıplarla yapılan cümleler sanki başlarında although varmış gibi anlaşılırlar.

v       Try as he might, he has little chance of being successful[a18] . (Though he might try…)

However + adjective /adverb

 

 

v       However hungry I am, I never seem to be able to finish off a whole pizza.[a20]
