WOULD RATHER (I'd rather) + Than (Tercih İfadesi ve “Than” ifadesi)

”Would rather” ifadesinden sonra fiil “to” ifadesi almaksızın, yalın halde kullanılır. İki şey arasında tercih yapılıyorsa   “would rather”   ifadesinden    sonra  ”than”  kullanılır.  “Would rather”   ifadesinin olumsuz hali  “would rather not” şeklindedir.

v           Shall we go by boat?[i1]                                                

                I’d rather go by car.[i2]                                            

 

v       I'd rather go by car.[i3]     

 

v       I'd rather stay at home.[i4]                                                             

 

v       Would you rather have lemonade or ice-tea?[i5]

Geçmişte yapıpta şu an hoşnut olmadığımızı belirtmek için kullanırız.

v       I’d rather have stayed at home than (have) gone to that boring party[i10] .

*** would rather +  Somebody did something

Eylemi yapcak kişi farklıysa fiil ikinci halinde kullanılır.Anlam present ya da future dır.

v       I’d rather he went by bus. [i11] (anlam: present)

v       He wants to be a teacher but I’d rather he became a doctor[i12] .

v       I would rather (that) you stayed at home[i13] .  

***would rather +  Somebody had done something

Geçmişte olmuş bir eylem hakkında başka birinin tercihi hakkında konuşurken past perfect kullanılır.Anlam past dır.

v       My friend took me to the student opera yesterday. I’d rather he had taken me to the theater instead.[i14] 

v       My son became a teacher last year. I’d rather he had become a doctor[i15] 

WOULD RATHER / WOULD SOONER / WOULD JUST AS SOON 

Would Rather / Would Sooner / Would Just As Soon  aynı anlamı verirler.

 

v       They would rather die than surrender.[i16] 

 

v       ‘Do you mind if I smoke?’ ‘Well, I’d rather you didn’t.’[i17] 

 

v       I’d rather you came with us.[i18] 

 

v       I'd just as soon stay in - I'm not feeling very well.[i19] 

 

v       I’d just as soon stay at home as go out tonight[i20] .

 

v       I'd just as soon work at home and not have the hassle of the subway every morning.[i21] 

 

v       I would just as soon not hear about it[i22] 

 

v       She’d sooner share a house with other students than live at home with her parents[i23]

NOT: WOULD RATHER reported speech’te değişmez.

Ø       He said, “I’d rather go by bus.”         He said he’d rather go by bus

 

Not:  WOULD RATHER kendisinden sonra doğrudan isim almaz,

Ø       He would rather have a house in the town.               (= I prefer a house in the town.)
